President Donald Trump removed Attorney General Pam Bondi from her position on Thursday, ending a tenure marked by controversy and growing frustration from the White House. Sources familiar with the matter say Trump had become increasingly dissatisfied with Bondi's handling of the Jeffrey Epstein files and her perceived reluctance to pursue criminal cases against Trump's political opponents and critics.
Todd Blanche, the current Deputy Attorney General and a former personal attorney for Trump, has been named as her temporary replacement to lead the Justice Department. Trump acknowledged Bondi's service on social media, calling her a loyal patriot, while Bondi described her time leading the department as a career highlight. She confirmed she would spend the following month facilitating the leadership transition.
During her time as the nation's top law enforcement officer, Bondi aggressively championed Trump's policy agenda and significantly reduced the Justice Department's traditional independence from executive influence. However, her management of records tied to Epstein — a financier and convicted sex offender with connections to numerous powerful figures — became a persistent controversy. Critics, including Republican lawmakers and Trump allies, accused her of mishandling or suppressing the release of DOJ investigation records tied to Epstein's sex-trafficking network.
Despite the release of nearly three million pages of documents following a bipartisan law passed in November mandating disclosure, controversy continued over redactions and the exposure of victims' identities. Bondi had also been scheduled to testify before the House Oversight Committee on April 14 after being subpoenaed.
Her dismissal marks the second high-profile cabinet removal in recent weeks, following the ousting of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem in early March. Potential replacements being considered include EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin, though no official announcement regarding a permanent nominee has been made.
