“Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales” is the latest title to come out of the brilliant minds of CD Projekt Red, the creators of “The Witcher” video game series; not to be confused with “The Witcher” book series, which was created by Andrzej Sapkowski. Featuring wild departures from the style of its most recent project, “The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt,” “Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales” is a truly unique beast.
For those who have played any of CD Projekt Red’s other projects, this new trailer for “Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales” might just be the most trippy piece of video magic ever devised. It’s almost as if the developers saw various indie video game concepts and just mashed them all together to make this title.
The clip features gameplay and visuals that are reminiscent of Telltale’s storytelling, the studio’s own card game “Gwent,” and classic tabletop isometric titles. Instead of a confusing mush of a game, however, the result is quite intriguing and brings a refreshing take on an increasingly crowded industry. “Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales” is basically CD Projekt Red pushing the boundaries, yet again.
Of course, with the game not even being out yet, it’s too early to declare “Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales” as a good game. Since it isn’t exactly a mainline “Witcher” title, there’s a good chance that it won’t live up to fan expectations. Then again, this is CD Projekt Red, so what are the chances that it’s going to suck?
The developers also have another aim with “Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales,” Polygon notes, which is to teach gamers how to play “Gwent.” It does so by weaving tutorials seamlessly into the narrative of the game, which is frankly a stroke of genius that is becoming the studio’s trademark.
“Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales” is scheduled for release on Oct. 23 for the PC. It will become available on Dec. 4 for the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One.
