Series creator Dan Fogelman told fans that the COVID-19 pandemic is going to be part of the story in “This Is Us” season 5. He, however, assured viewers that this development will not change their original plans for how the season will end.

‘This Is Us’ season 5 will include COVID-19 story arc (Season 4 spoilers ahead)

It is still uncertain how the “This Is Us” season 5 schedule would look like now that it obviously cannot maintain its usual September release date. But Fogelman confirmed on Twitter that the very reason that changed the annual production cycle of the series -- COVID-19 -- will be part of the next season’s narrative.

Responding to reporter Dema Hanna’s series of questions, Fogelman tweeted that they have “decided to attack things head on” and address the global pandemic in “This Is Us” season 5’s present-day scenes. The series creator then added that he is proud of the show writers before adding that including the COVID-19 narrative will not change the “planned ending.”

Fogelman also wrote that the storyline they have planned that would eventually lead to the “This Is Us” season 5 finale is not changing as well. This suggests that the inclusion of the COVID-19 pandemic is not going to be a major subject throughout the season. But it is still going to be interesting how this health crisis would affect the Pearsons following what happened in season 4 finale. Randall (Sterling K. Brown) and Kevin’s (Justin Hartley) had a relationship-ending fight, Rebecca (Mandy Moore) decided to move to Missouri for the clinical trial for her illness, and Kate (Chrissy Metz) and Toby (Chris Sullivan) agreed on adopting a second child.

Fogelman also addressed questions about the production timeline of “This Is Us” season 5. The series creator was unable to give even an estimate of the next episodes’ release dates because they also have not set a start date for production. Movie and TV show filmings, as well as premiere dates, have been delayed due to COVID-19.

In the previous years, new seasons of “This Is Us” usually premiere in the second half of September. A change in the show’s annual schedule is very likely starting in season 5. Right now, the popular and Emmy Award-winning drama series is certain to have at least six seasons after NBC ordered three more installments in May 2019.
