Smart cities initiatives are increasing as government agencies and municipalities deploy wide area networks to gather data and use advanced applications and Cloud-based or enterprise-based systems to process and analyze the data. In 2016, the U.S. Department of Transportation invested $165 million in smart city solutions to help ease traffic congestion and improve pedestrian safety.
The Smart Cities Council’s main goal is to educate and advise cities about best practices and resources to achieve workability, livability and sustainability.
Semtech’s LoRa® devices and wireless RF technology (LoRa Technology) and low power, wide area networks (LPWAN) based on the LoRaWAN™ protocol provides a smart sensing and control infrastructure. LoRa Technology delivers solutions that are optimized for smart city applications that rely on battery-powered sensors including smart lighting and smart parking. LoRaWAN-based networks deliver secure, bi-directional communication with long data transmission range to cover an urban area using minimal network infrastructure.
“We are so pleased to welcome Semtech to the Council," said Chairman Jesse Berst at Smart Cities Council. “The company's innovative LoRa Technology is an integral component of our increasingly digital world – from smart grids to wireless infrastructure to the Internet of Things. It's exciting to have Semtech's vast expertise available to help guide cities as they integrate these smart technologies."
“Smart city technology is changing the way cities, governments and citizens interact,” said Mike Wong, Vice President of Marketing for Semtech’s Wireless and Sensing Products Group. “LoRa Technology is an important platform since it is an enabler of smart city solutions while improving quality of life and reducing operating expenses.”
