Prince Charles: Why the Duke of Cornwall will not abdicate the throne for his son Prince William

Prince Charles is the longest-serving heir to the British throne, having been made next in line for the throne since 1952. But as the years go by, it bears wondering if he would willingly give up his stake on the throne in favor of his eldest son, Prince William.

Queen Elizabeth II is known as the longest-reigning monarch and has also decided years back that she will reign for as long as she lives, whether it be a long life or a short one. Express reports that as Prince Charles is already getting older, many are speculating whether he would end up deciding to give up the throne for Prince William when the Queen finally decides to abdicate the throne or has passed away. According to the University College London Constitution Unit of the School of Public Policy, it is unlikely that the Duke of Cornwall will be abdicating the throne for his son as well.

They went on to explain that it is entirely up to Prince Charles and the Parliament as well. But one thing is certain and it is that the Queen will never want abdication to happen for two reasons. The first reason being the famous abdication of Edward VIII, which brought her father, George VI, to the throne as a reluctant king. The second reason is her declaration that she will remain queen for as long as she lives. The Queen also thinks of her coronation as a sacred duty to reign.

Knowing that Prince Charles has waited decades to assume duties as the reigning monarch, it would be understandable that he will want to take on the throne much sooner than abdicate. However, it would also be understandable, that because he is getting older, he will want to pass on the duties to his eldest son via the Parliament instead.

The Duke of Cambridge has been very open about the discussion of mental health and is known as one of the driving forces for the discussion to happen. Express previously reported that Prince William talked about mental health in the two-minute film shown at the FA Cup, urging everyone to be open in the discussion. The video will be shown at the beginning of all 32 games that will occur, and this is in partnership between the mental health charity Heads Together and Every Mind Matters of Public Health England, backed by The Royal Foundation.
