OpenAI is moving forward with an ambitious plan to consolidate its flagship products — ChatGPT, Codex, and its browser-based tools — into a single, unified desktop application, according to a Wall Street Journal report. The strategic pivot signals a deliberate effort to simplify its product ecosystem and double down on enterprise customers, a market where rival Anthropic has been steadily gaining ground.
The decision follows an internal review of OpenAI's product portfolio led by CEO Sam Altman and other senior executives, who identified fragmented product launches as a barrier to growth and user retention. By bringing multiple tools under one roof, OpenAI hopes to deliver a more seamless, intuitive experience for business users who rely on AI for complex workflows.
Leading the initiative is Chief of Applications Fidji Simo, who will work closely with OpenAI President Greg Brockman on both product development and broader organizational restructuring. Their combined focus suggests the company views this consolidation not just as a product update, but as a fundamental shift in how it competes in the enterprise AI space.
A key feature of the new superapp will be its emphasis on agentic AI — technology that enables systems to operate autonomously, completing multi-step tasks such as writing and debugging software, conducting data analysis, and executing research workflows without constant human input. This capability is increasingly seen as a major differentiator in enterprise AI adoption.
OpenAI expects to complete the merger of its desktop tools within the coming months. Notably, the mobile version of ChatGPT will remain a standalone app, keeping its existing user experience intact for everyday consumers.
As competition in enterprise AI intensifies, this consolidation positions OpenAI to offer a more compelling, all-in-one solution for businesses seeking productivity-driven AI tools at scale.
