Urology Associates introduces a 10-minute treatment for enlarged prostate (BPH) that utilizes energy in water to shrink the gland that troubles half of men over age 60.
DENVER, March 10, 2016 -- Urology Associates recently became the first practice in Colorado, and one of the few in the United States, to offer Rezūm therapy that uses stored energy naturally occurring from water vapor to shrink prostate tissue in cases of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). BPH is a common issue that eventually affects most men, though an estimated 50 percent of them decide not seek treatment because of poor options.
“Currently, patients dealing with the extremely bothersome symptoms of BPH are limited to two options: they can take medications that don’t reverse the problem and only help manage it, or they can opt for surgery that includes a potentially long recovery process and subsequent side effects,” says Barrett E. Cowan, M.D., of Urology Associates who served as one of the leading investigators during Rezūm clinical trials. “I’ve performed about 30 procedures using the Rezūm therapy and I can confidently say that it is a game-changer for millions of men who suffer from debilitating symptoms of BPH.”
BPH can cause life-disrupting symptoms, such as frequent urges to urinate, having to get up several times at night and difficulty urinating during the day, as well as attending psychological distress. According to a recent report by Dymedex Consulting, 12 million men have been diagnosed with BPH and over 50 percent of those have made the decision not to seek treatment based on the current offerings.
Cowan says Rezūm therapy, offered by NxThera, changes that because it is a non-surgical, non-medicinal option that is effective and safe. The procedure is done in-office and takes 5-10 minutes. Furthermore, unlike other surgical options for treating BPH, it does not require an anesthetic.
During Rezūm therapy, the urologist inserts a small, narrow device through the urethra and delivers water vapor directly into the enlarged prostate tissue. Upon contact with the tissue, thermal energy is released that kills the affected cells. This reduction in tissue relieves the majority of BPH’s primary symptoms. Over time, the body’s immune system absorbs the Rezūm-altered tissue, and patients feel no after effects.
“My patient who struggled with frequent urinary urges and failed to get an adequate amount of sleep during the night due to his BPH reported that after Rezūm therapy, all of his symptoms subsided,” said Cowan of 74-year-old Littleton resident, Ken Whiteacre. “He was very averse to having surgery and didn’t want to take a pill every day for the rest of his life. Rezūm has been a life changing option for him.”
The announcement of Rezūm therapy follows Cowan’s involvement with Aquablation therapy, recently covered on Fox News. Aquablation is a new, minimally-invasive technique to reduce symptoms of prostate-related health issues.
