RICHFIELD, Ohio, April 13, 2017 -- Stephen E. Winborn, Vice President of Corporate Claims at National Interstate Insurance, received the 2017 USLAW NETWORK Bill Burns Award. The award was created to recognize a client who has shown outstanding service and dedication to USLAW each year. It is named after Bill Burns, a longtime transportation risk management and litigation leader for Landstar System, Inc., a Jacksonville, Florida-based transportation company. Mr. Burns was named the first recipient of the award.
In his current role, Steve has responsibility for the National Interstate family of companies including National Interstate Insurance Company, National Interstate Insurance Company of Hawaii and Vanliner Insurance Company’s claim operations. Most recently, Steve was Vice President of Operations for Vanliner, a subsidiary of National Interstate’s and the leader in insurance for the moving and storage industry. Prior to joining Vanliner, Steve served as outside counsel at Evans & Dixon, LLC and as senior director of Tort Litigation for leading household good carriers United Van Lines, Mayflower Transit and their parent, UniGroup.
Steve serves as the Secretary on USLAW NETWORK’s Client Leadership Council and has authored multiple industry articles. He received his undergraduate degree from Washington University and his law degree from the University of Missouri School of Law.
“We are pleased to present Steve with the 2017 USLAW NETWORK Bill Burns Award for his unwavering commitment to USLAW and our members, and for the industry knowledge that he has generously and consistently shared with the NETWORK through the years,” said Lew R.C. Bricker, chair of USLAW and a partner of USLAW NETWORK member firm SmithAmundsen in Illinois. “Over the years I have known and worked with Steve, he has always strived to ensure that his company’s customers receive the best service, protection and industry education that can be offered. Steve is great friend of the NETWORK. He shares the great values Bill Burns has and the passion Bill demonstrated throughout his career.”
“For over 25 years, Steve has defended transportation companies and their insurers in the capacities of counsel, industry manager and now insurance executive. I am extremely proud and honored to have Steve on the National Interstate team and want to congratulate him again on this award,” said Tony Mercurio, President and CEO of National Interstate.
“I am honored and humbled to receive this award, because of my respect and admiration for the award’s namesake and the network itself. I accept it on behalf of all Claims and Risk Management professionals at the National Interstate family of companies as well as our customers who have benefited from what I often refer to as our extended team at USLAW who consistently provide us with swift, efficient, cost-effective response and solutions,” said award winner, Steve Winborn. “I have had the good fortune of watching this group of visionaries grow from a small handful of firms and customers in 2001 to approximately 100 independent, full-service firms today. I have been blessed to know Bill Burns as a gentlemen, colleague and friend for more than 20 years and benefit from his generous mentoring and industry knowledge. He is the quintessential example for claims and risk management professionals today, and modeled the way with his empathic approach, and unwavering honesty and integrity.”
