U.S. Representative Mikie Sherrill secured the Democratic nomination for New Jersey governor on Tuesday, defeating five high-profile contenders, including Rep. Josh Gottheimer and Newark Mayor Ras Baraka. Sherrill, a former Navy helicopter pilot and federal prosecutor, will face Republican Jack Ciattarelli, a former state assemblyman endorsed by Donald Trump, in the November general election.
The New Jersey race is one of only two gubernatorial elections in 2025, alongside Virginia’s, making it a key political battleground ahead of the 2026 midterms. Sherrill campaigned on defending New Jersey against Trump-aligned policies, while highlighting her national security and legal background. Her opponents criticized her ties to a SpaceX-linked PAC, though she later donated the amount received to a food bank.
Ciattarelli, who narrowly lost to Gov. Phil Murphy in 2021, gained momentum after Trump’s endorsement and cruised through the Republican primary. Despite New Jersey's Democratic tilt, it showed a significant shift toward Trump between 2020 and 2024, raising GOP hopes.
Over $87 million was spent on the race as of June 4, making it the most expensive in state history, with over 70% of TV ads referencing Trump. Democrats united around resisting Trump’s influence while addressing local issues like affordability and high property taxes.
This was the first primary held under a new ballot design, eliminating the controversial “county line” system that previously favored party-endorsed candidates. The reform followed a federal court ruling deeming the old layout unconstitutional, after a lawsuit from Democratic Senator Andy Kim.
The outcome in November could be historic: if Sherrill wins, it would mark the first time in over 60 years that one party has won three consecutive gubernatorial terms in New Jersey.
