Looks like the Microsoft Surface Phone 2018 is still being developed after all despite rumors of the project being abandoned.

In a recent interview with The Verge, Microsoft chief product designer Panos Panay admitted that they still have plans to release a foldable Surface device that can easily fit in the pocket. He even considers the Microsoft Surface Phone 2018 his “baby.”

“We will invent and we will create when products are right. We can’t bring new categories into the world and not be a place where customers need it. Right now we see people use these products in ways that are blowing my mind, it’s inspiring,” Panay said.

“I think Surface Hub 2 is ready. I think any other form factor you haven’t seen yet we’ve gotta get right, we’ve got to make sure we keep inventing to make it perfect. I’m not talking about just the hardware, I’m talking about the whole thing,” he added.

Microsoft actually had plans to develop a 7-inch Surface Mini tablet back in 2014, but they decided to cancel the project before it was introduced because they didn’t think it was really that different from the other smaller tablets in the market at that time.

When the company eventually releases the Microsoft Surface Phone 2018 in the future, they want to make sure that the device has the necessary features to set it apart from its rivals. The existence of the Microsoft Surface Phone has been circulating around the rumor mill for years now, but not much is known about the device aside from the fact that it’s supposed to be foldable. Still, it is expected to be a game changer once it finally sees the light.

Codenamed Andromeda, the Microsoft Surface Phone has reportedly been developed in the past two years and it has appeared in reports, patents, and in operating system references, according to The Verge.
