The presidential elections may be over, but the race continues for control of the Senate in the Georgia runoffs. As president-elect Joe Biden visited the state, he also stressed the need to flip the Senate.
Biden visited Georgia on Tuesday to rally support behind the Democratic Senate challengers Jon Ossoff and Reverend Raphael Warnock as they run to unseat GOP incumbents David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler. The runoffs would take place on January 5 and will determine which political party will claim control of the Senate. Biden addressed the crowd of supporters of the candidates and said that there should be two Democratic victories from the runoffs in order for his administration to be able to implement his agenda.
Biden also warned that any losses would result in Republican obstruction that Barack Obama faced during his terms as president. The president-elect, whose victory was finalized by the Electoral College and was long-projected since November, also criticized the Republican incumbents for also failing to support a COVID-19 stimulus proposal.
“We can get so much done, so much that can make the lives of the people of Georgia and the whole country so much better,” said Biden during the drive-in rally. “And we need senators who are willing to do it, for God’s sake.”
Only a handful of congressional Republicans, the latest being Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, have acknowledged Biden as president-elect. Loeffler and Perdue have stuck with Trump’s claims of election fraud and backed the unsuccessful lawsuit filed in the Supreme Court. During Biden’s visit, he also contacted his key supporters in the state, Stacey Abrams and Atlanta mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms.
Trump and his allies have often used Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, against him throughout the campaign. Following the recent revelations that a tax probe was being conducted on Hunter and his financial records, Biden stated that he is confident his son did not do anything wrong. Biden made the statement when pressed by a Fox News reporter on Wednesday. This would be the first time Biden publicly addressed the questions surrounding his son’s finances and businesses.
A week prior, Mr. Biden revealed that his taxes are being investigated by the US Attorney’s office in Delaware.
