Japanese crypto exchange bitFlyer receives license to operate in Illinois

Leading Japanese cryptocurrency exchange bitFlyer has announced that it is now licensed to operate in the state of Illinois.

The announcement follows the startup’s expansion into Europe last month after it received a Payment Institution (PI) license to operate in the common currency area.

bitFlyer first revealed its plans to expand to the U.S. in August 2017. In November, it received BitLicense from the New York State Department of Financial Services (NYDFS).

bitFlyer has now received approval to operate in 44 states and territories, Bitcoin Magazine reported. It has become the first digital currency exchange to be regulated in Japan, the U.S., and the EU.

"We successfully launched last November in 42 states and are very excited to add Illinois to that list. Big picture, bitFlyer aims to be a global exchange and allow cross-border trading. This means our various entities’ compliance programs need to reflect evolving regulatory requirements both locally and abroad," Hailey Lennon, bitFlyer's U.S. Director of Compliance, told Bitcoin Magazine.
