Israel and Hamas are preparing for the next phase of ceasefire negotiations, aiming to extend the fragile truce that began in January. Hamas stated there were "positive indicators" for progress, while Israel confirmed its delegation would travel to Doha on Monday for discussions mediated by the U.S., Egypt, and Qatar.
A Hamas delegation is currently in Cairo engaging with Egyptian mediators to push the talks forward. Hamas spokesman Abdel-Latif Al-Qanoua reiterated the group’s readiness to negotiate, emphasizing the need for humanitarian aid and an end to Gaza’s blockade. Additionally, Hamas expressed approval for an independent committee to govern Gaza until elections, aligning with Egypt’s proposed post-war governance plan.
Despite ongoing diplomatic efforts, violence persists. An Israeli airstrike killed two Palestinians in Rafah, following another drone strike on Friday that targeted suspected militants. Israel’s military stated it hit a drone crossing from Israel into Gaza and suspects attempting to retrieve it.
The ceasefire deal that took effect in January outlines the release of the remaining 59 hostages in Hamas captivity as part of a second-phase agreement. Since the first phase ended, Israel has enforced a total blockade on Gaza, demanding the hostages' release before further negotiations.
The war, which began on October 7, 2023, after a Hamas-led attack killed 1,200 Israelis and took 251 hostages, has resulted in over 48,000 Palestinian deaths, according to Gaza health authorities. The conflict has displaced nearly Gaza’s entire population, drawing accusations of war crimes, which Israel denies.
With diplomatic efforts intensifying, the upcoming negotiations could determine whether the ceasefire leads to a long-term resolution or renewed hostilities.
