Washington, DC, July 26, 2017 -- Cancer diagnostics and pathology workflow solution provider Inspirata®, Inc. announced today that it has been one year since the kick-off of what is widely considered one of the most comprehensive digital pathology workflow solutions in the country at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (the OSUCCC – James). To help commemorate this milestone, Inspirata will be offering attendees at the APC annual meeting in Washington, DC a behind-the-scenes look at this project during a corporate workshop.

The far-reaching engagement is being implemented at the James Cancer Hospital and the Department for Pathology both located at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio. The end-to-end digital pathology workflow solution includes retrospective and prospective histopathology slide scanning, diagnostic cockpits for more than 50 pathologists, consultation portal, complete program and project planning as well as operational staffing, scan lab staffing, management and support.
The state-of-the-art scanning center at the James Cancer Hospital went online in May with the retrospective scanning portion of the project. Currently the center is scanning more than 10,500 pathology slides per week. According to Inspirata’s Senior Vice President of Digital Pathology, Sunil Singhal, “We expect this number to gradually increase to our full production capacity of scanning 21,000 slides per week once we begin the prospective scanning phase of the project.”
“While this project started off with digital pathology and the process of converting glass histology slides to digital whole slide images, it has grown to involve collaboration well beyond digital pathology,” explains Inspirata CEO Satish Sanan. “We are working very closely with the cancer center on a wide range of strategic projects that will help improve access to cancer data across the institution, as well as provide workflow improvements to enhance efficiency and help reduce costs.”
These adjacent projects span the development of cockpits for research, operations and a multidisciplinary tumor board, each of which leverage Inspirata’s Enterprise Service Bus and Natural Language Processing engine to access and structure longitudinal patient data from disparate sources and systems. Today, research operations and other departments at cancer centers often rely on manual processes and redundant data entry, which can be inefficient, time consuming and costly for the institution.
Other initiatives Inspirata is collaborating on with the OSUCCC – James include using the Crosswalk Insight: Oncology™ mobile platform to develop custom end-user applications for clinicians, staff and patients for knowledge visualization, “just in time” learning and decision support. Inspirata also is involved in several sponsored research projects, including developing predictive assays and image analytics.
“The pinnacle of all of these collaborative activities is the creation of a Cancer Information Data Trust,” continues Sanan. “Versions of the CIDT with identified and de-identified patient data will be used by different stakeholders across the cancer center for cost-of-care analyses, health management, education, research operations, biopharma discovery and clinical activities.”
Pathology leaders from the OSUCCC – James will be on hand at the APC Annual Meeting as well as during the Inspirata workshop to present a behind-the-scenes look at the ongoing work taking place at the cancer center. The workshop is titled “Ushering in a New Era in Pathology: Going Digital Today,” and will be held from 3:00 – 4:30 on Thursday, July 27th in the Congressional Room at the Omni Shoreham Hotel.
