HUNDREDS OF U.S. MAYORS TO CONVENE IN MIAMI BEACH THIS SUMMER: Immigration, Healthcare, the Federal Budget and National Economy, Climate Protection, Homeland Security and Community Development Block Grants Top Agenda

Washington, D.C, June 12, 2017 -- Washington, D.C. – More than 250 of the nation’s mayors will meet in Miami Beach for the U.S. Conference of Mayors Annual Meeting, which runs from from June 23 to 26, 2017 at the Fountainbleu Hotel.  Under the leadership of USCM President Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett and host Miami Beach Mayor Phil Levine, mayors will discuss a wide variety of priorities that contribute to the overall health of America’s cities, as well as consider and adopt the policy resolutions that guide the advocacy agenda of the organization.

Highlights of the four-day event include remarks from Department of Labor Secretary Acosta, Veterans Affairs Secretary Shulkin, political strategist and pollster Frank Luntz and National Urban League President & CEO Marc Morial, Former Homeland Security Advisor Fran Townsend and author Richard Florida “The New Urban Crisis,” along with sessions on climate protection and resilience, the economy and employment forecast for 2017 and beyond, Community Development Block Grants and public safety. With more than 85% of people in the United States living in our nation’s cities and metro areas, mayors are convinced that despite their geographic location, cities large and small are plagued by many of the same challenges.  As a result, and unlike other elected officials, mayors are often able to find common ground and work in a true spirit of bipartisanship. 

USCM will give cash awards totaling more than $1 million to cities showcasing stellar best-practices in the areas of climate protection, community development, and college & career-readiness training.
