Global Geo-political Series: Trump administration reportedly preparing trade actions against China

According to a report from Reuters, the United States might be preparing itself to take trade related actions against China as the Trump administration is reportedly getting frustrated with China over its inaction on North Korea and other bilateral trade issues. Reuters cited three unnamed senior officials from the Trump administration as the source of the information.

During his campaign, President Trump was a fierce critique of Chinese trade surpluses with the United States that run in hundreds of billions of dollars every year and it was thought that once he comes to the office he would take up stringent trade actions against China. After his inauguration to the office, President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping held a two-day bilateral meeting at President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. President Trump described the meeting as a very successful one and said that he is not imposing any restrictions on China as he called on President Xi to help the United States with North Korea to deter it from its nuclear ballistic missile program.

According to Reuters, officials said the Trump feels like he gave China a chance to make a difference in North Korea issue but has not seen enough results. Hence, he is considering steps to protect American industries and American workers.
