An all-new “Fire Emblem” installment, titled “Three Houses,” was announced at the Nintendo media event at Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 2018 on Tuesday.

“Fire Emblem: Three Houses” is not the first from the franchise to ever arrive on the Nintendo Switch. However, it is notably the first “Fire Emblem” game with an all-new gameplay and story to be exclusively released on the portable console.

The upcoming game adopts the familiar turn-based, tactical role-playing gameplay that fans have seen on previous “Fire Emblem” titles. However, Nintendo noted that “Three Houses” will feature characters and a story arc that have never been introduced in the video game series.

“The game takes place on Fódlan, where the Church of Seiros exercises great power over the land and its people,” Nintendo said in a teaser. The video game company also promised that “Fire Emblem: Three Houses” will let players experience turn-based strategy gaming with “new strategic twists on battling, with formations of troops supporting individual units on the battlefield.”

“Fire Emblem: Three Houses,” at its core, is an RPG. So players are going to assume a role within the battles of Fódlan. Apart from winning combat, players will also have to build alliances, interact and establish relationships with other in-game characters, and collect helpful information to help with the strategy.

Some of the characters that players will encounter in the game are the main lords Edelgard, Dimitri, and Claude.

Some of the unique gameplay features in “Fire Emblem: Three Houses” are placed in the battling mechanics. For one, fans of the franchise will easily notice that the upcoming game features armies in the combat sequence shown in the trailer. This is a big change from just having the main characters dueling on the screen whenever players are in battle.

The armies’ moves are still closely tied to the movements of the characters. According to the game’s fact sheet from Nintendo, “Now when the player maneuvers a unit, formations of troops move with them and support them in battle.”

“Fire Emblem: Three Houses” is set for a 2019 launch.
