OXFORD, Mich., April 25, 2018 -- April is Parkinson’s Awareness Month and Rock Steady Boxing, Northern Oakland County located at Bullz Boxing Club inside The Legacy Center, will join millions in observing Parkinson’s Awareness Month. We urge everyone to join us as we promote greater awareness of how Parkinson’s affects those living with the disease, and their families. We offer open viewing to the public of all of our classes during the month of April, 2018 to promote awareness and education about Parkinson’s during the annual observance. Classes are Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 12:00 noon – 1:30 pm.
An estimated one million people in the U.S. live with Parkinson’s disease, the second-most common neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer’s and the 14th-leading cause of death in our country. Symptoms vary, but can include; tremors, difficulty with balance, swallowing, chewing, speaking and cognitive impairment. Rock Steady Boxing, Northern Oakland County in Oxford, Michigan gives those living with Parkinson’s hope today by offering “Rock Steady Boxing,” a non-contact, boxing-inspired fitness routine proving to dramatically improve their quality of life.
According to the Michigan Parkinson’s Foundation, more than 10 million people worldwide are living with Parkinson's disease and more than 60,000 Americans are diagnosed each year. Recent medical studies, including one at the Cleveland Clinic, focus on intense “forced” exercise and indicate that certain types of exercise can exert a neuroprotective influence and may slow the progression of this chronic, incurable disease. Rock Steady serves participants at all stages of Parkinson’s – from the newly diagnosed to those who have been living with the disease for decades.
Our mission is to inspire and provide hope and a better quality of life for those who are fighting back against this disease. "I train them like I train everyone else, except they are fighting for their lives," said Bull, owner of Bullz Boxing Club and Rock Steady Boxing coach.
Supporters from Bullz Boxing Club are participating in the Michigan Parkinson’s Foundation’s “2018 I Gave My Sole For Parkinson’s,” Metro Detroit Walk, on Saturday, May 19, 2018 to raise money to fund research and programs for people suffering with Parkinson’s. You can make a difference by joining our team and/or donating generously by way of pledge to any of our team members. Together, with your support, we can reach our fundraising goal. The team name is, “Bullz Boxers.”
