RALEIGH, N.C., Dec. 18, 2016 -- Eye patients should be aware and vigilant about the possibility of a serious eye condition that can develop. Binocular Vision Dysfunction, often shortened to BVD, is a disorder that causes one eye to see things differently than the other. Frustrating symptoms can arise from the condition. Family Eye Care Center offers assistance and treatments for addressing this distressing vision problem.
Not surprisingly, BVD symptoms often dramatically reduce quality of life. The condition can be caused by a concussion, traumatic brain injury, or other head injury. Binocular Vision Dysfunction is often preceded or accompanied by dyslexia, ADHD, or other learning disabilities. Symptoms can include double vision, vertigo, and blurry vision due to this difference in perception and incompatibility between the eyes. Headaches, dizziness, difficulty in concentrating, and trouble with reading are some of the other possible symptoms of BVD. Learning disorders and general anxiety can also result from the ongoing inability to use the eyes properly.
The first step is a thorough, comprehensive eye exam from a Rocky Mount and Raleigh eye doctor so that vision and eye health can be assessed. An appropriate treatment will then be prescribed to help bring relief and to resolve the issue.
Because BVD is characterized by the eyes being misaligned with each another, one possible treatment is the creation and use of special lenses or glasses that make use of prisms. When properly made, adjusted, and fitted, optimal alignment of the eyes can be restored. Once corrected by these specialized lenses, the eyes can work together more effectively to correct vision. Symptoms are reduced, and quality of life increases. The client may no longer experience headaches, migraines, impaired coordination, reading issues, anxiety, dizziness, or balance issues.
In addition to BVD treatment from Family Eye Care Center, the eyes can also be assessed for issues such as infections, macular degeneration, farsightedness, dry eye syndrome, astigmatism, and diabetic retinopathy.
Dr. Jeffrey Handschumacher says, “Binocular Vision Dysfunction is a serious eye disorder that involves a vision imbalance. The symptoms can be quite distressing and impair quality of life. We encourage anyone with these symptoms to make an appointment with our Rocky Mount or Raleigh optometry clinic so we can connect you with the appropriate treatment.”
