A U.S. military aircraft was shot down by Iranian forces on Friday, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing five-week conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran. Both nations confirmed the incident, with one crew member successfully rescued after ejecting and another still unaccounted for, according to U.S. sources.
The downing of what defense analysts identified as an F-15E Strike Eagle — a two-seat combat jet — exposed serious vulnerabilities in U.S. and Israeli air operations, contradicting earlier claims by President Donald Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth that allied forces held complete aerial dominance over Iran. A separate U.S. Air Force aircraft also crashed in the Gulf region the same day, though its pilot was recovered safely.
Iranian state media reported that local residents fired on U.S. search-and-rescue helicopters deployed after the crash. Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps launched a search operation in southwestern Iran, and regional authorities offered rewards for anyone who captured or eliminated enemy personnel on Iranian soil.
Diplomatic efforts to end the war appear stalled. Iran has reportedly rejected proposed talks with U.S. officials in Islamabad, telling mediators that Pakistani-led ceasefire negotiations have collapsed, according to the Wall Street Journal. The conflict, which began with U.S. and Israeli strikes that killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on February 28, has claimed thousands of lives, injured over 300 American troops, and killed 13 U.S. service members.
Economic fallout continues to grow. U.S. crude oil prices surged 11% following Trump's latest remarks, which offered no indication of imminent peace. Iran meanwhile struck a power and water facility in Kuwait, while drone attacks were reported near Saudi Arabia, Abu Dhabi, and Israel. Trump threatened further strikes on Iranian bridges and electrical infrastructure, as the region braces for continued hostilities with no resolution in sight.
