Essay Position In Education System. Why It's Necessary To Do?

Education has always been present in our lives. From ancient times people felt the need to learn how to survive - find the food and shelter. With the flow of time, the needs have changed, but the idea of the importance of education remains the same. It’s not only about learning history or geography, but also about acquiring a bunch of vital skills for life. People spend a huge part of their lives going to kindergartens, schools, colleges, universities and additional courses. These are not purely places for getting the knowledge, but for social interaction, self-expression, and creativity. Education is about teaching and learning the skills for further usage in real life - effective communication, expressing the thoughts clearly, time-management, self-discipline, ability to prioritize you name it.

Why are The Essays Important for Students?

The situation with education nowadays might seem to bother a lot of people, be they professional in the sphere or the ones who experienced the learning process themselves. The rhythm of life that we have in the present moment, the development of technology and the growth of the job market make things hectic. The parents, the teachers are becoming more and more demanding to the kids and the curriculum is very tight and overwhelming with numerous tasks of different types:

  • Projects
  • Reports
  • Lab works
  • Term papers
  • Essays

More often than not, kids and older teenagers experience high levels of stress because of deadlines and strict requirements. Instead of concentrating on their studies they just have to deal with homework and manage all the expectations from the adults around.

On the one hand, nobody can deny that having assignments are important and there are lots of benefits of them, as they:

  • develop students’ critical thinking and creativity
  • teach them to communicate their ideas and thoughts clearly
  • show them how to prove them with reasonable arguments.

The other side of this medal is that there are too many assignments and they are too diverse. Take essays, for instance. Its definition is a short piece of writing on a particular subject. But how many types of essays do you now? Narrative, expository, persuasive and loads more. The noble idea of developing kids’ skills turns into the quest called “figure out the peculiarities of a specific type of essay to successfully pass it”. The focus shifts from the stressless joy of writing the essay and exploring its topic to meeting that terrible deadline.

How We can Make Writing Essays More Fun?

This may seem like there are more negative things about having essays as a kind of task at school and higher education institutions. But surely that’s not true! The main point is that something should be changed in order to help students feel less stressed about writing a perfect essay having no proper skills and enough time for that. Delegating part of the job to people with deeper knowledge of the subject and much larger writing experience can relieve stress and give the children’s minds more space for creativity.

Another thing that should be done on a deeper level (and it’s probably quite a time-consuming process) is rethinking the curricula in all educational institutions. By lowering the demand and reducing the number of subjects or assignments, educators could bring back the essence of the educational process and allow more time for the students to master their writing skills and deepen the knowledge. They could feel less tension and more freedom for improving their critical thinking and expressing creativity in a number of different ways.

As Martin Luther King Jr. once said about education: “The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education.” This is something we shouldn’t forget about in our modern society and try to get back on track to pursue the true goal of teaching and learning. If we stop for a moment to think about ways of how to make this real, there will be definitely an improvement in the whole educational sphere.

By the way, Martin Luther’s quote can become a fascinating intro for the essay in which students from all over the world could express their own opinion about the way they learn. Who else could say what they really want and need in their studying journey than students themselves? Anyway, there’s no doubt that education is crucial in people’s lives and we must all work on constant improvement of this life sphere.

“There is no end to education. It is not that you read a book, pass an examination, and finish with education. The whole of life, from the moment you are born to the moment you die, is a process of learning”.
