Elon Musk made waves by endorsing Germany's far-right AfD (Alternative für Deutschland) during a campaign event in Halle. Speaking via video to 4,500 attendees alongside AfD leader Alice Weidel, Musk emphasized the importance of preserving German culture, warning against the effects of multiculturalism.
“It’s good to be proud of German culture and values, without losing them to dilution,” Musk stated. He also criticized Germany's focus on its Nazi past, saying, “Children should not bear the guilt of their ancestors.”
This marks Musk’s second public support for AfD in two weeks, following an uproar after a gesture he made at a U.S. event was likened to a Nazi salute. His remarks reignited debates over historical guilt and national identity in Germany.
Musk has been vocal on X (formerly Twitter), criticizing German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and accusing the government of suppressing free speech. Scholz countered, stating that freedom of speech does not justify extremist views.
During his address, Musk called the AfD Germany's “best hope,” urging voters to support the party. Weidel echoed his sentiments, drawing parallels between AfD and the American Republican Party.
Musk’s involvement in German politics has sparked concerns about election interference, especially after hosting Weidel in an interview on X. Critics and anti-far-right groups mobilized in large protests across Berlin and Cologne, with tens of thousands braving winter weather to denounce extremism.
Musk’s statements and actions continue to fuel controversy, highlighting his growing influence in global political discourse while sparking debates over nationalism and free speech.
