With the “Domestic Girlfriend” manga series now over, the question about bringing back its anime adaptation is making a comeback in online discussions. As anime fans continue to hope for new episodes to be released, series creator Kei Sasuga has shared what she knows about the show’s future.
‘Domestic Girlfriend’ season 2 renewed or canceled?
The “Domestic Girlfriend” anime adaptation debuted around five years since the serialization of the same title manga series. Bringing it to the small screen appeared to have done its supposed purpose of gathering new fans that would also be interested in reading the manga series. But it has also been apparent that fans who learned about the series through the anime have been wanting to see “Domestic Girlfriend” season 2 happen.
Unfortunately, the studio Diomedea and publisher Kodansha have not announced anything about “Domestic Girlfriend” season 2 even after the manga concluded last month. Even Sasuga does not have any concrete news about the anime’s renewal when a fan asked about the second season earlier this year.
A fan replied to Sasuga’s tweet from 2019 teasing about the season 1 finale with a question about “Domestic Girlfriend” season 2. The series creator’s response was straightforward telling the fan that (translation via DeepL), “There are no plans for a second season.”

For now, the most accurate way to put it is that there are no plans to renew the show as Sasuga said. But there is always a small chance for anime shows to be revived, especially if it has plenty of source materials left to be explored. The manga had more than 270 chapters, and the events covered in season 1 were only up until chapter 72. Long-time fans have been pointing out, though, that the first season skipped plenty of chapters. Still, that means “Domestic Girlfriend” season 2 would have many manga materials to use.
‘Domestic Girlfriend’ season 2 plot: What to expect once the anime is renewed?
The first season ended on a cliffhanger with Natsuo and Hina being forced to break up while Rui promised to no longer hold back on her feelings for their step-brother. If “Domestic Girlfriend” season 2 is ever made and followed the next events in the manga, fans could expect Rui to deliver on that promise.
As Hina tries hard to keep her distance, it obliges Natsuo to move on not without Rui’s help. So fans who decided to be on Team Rui after the first 12 episodes would be in favor of what could happen in “Domestic Girlfriend” season 2.
