The highly anticipated follow-up to Activision’s free-to-play “Call of Duty: Warzone” is going live next week. Fans can still play the first “Warzone,” but Activision says it has to temporarily take it offline to focus on the new game.
Activision detailed its plans for the games in a blog post this week. Servers for the first “Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0” will be taken down for a couple of hours at around 8 a.m. PT on Wednesday, Nov. 16. It coincides with the conclusion of “Vanguard” season 5. But the servers will not be available again until Monday, Nov. 28.
During this time, however, fans will be available to dive in on “Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0” once it goes live on Nov. 16 at around 10 a.m. PT. This also marks the beginning of “Modern Warfare II” Season 1.
In the 12 days that the first “Call of Duty: Warzone” is not available, Activision says it wants to focus its development resources, especially Raven Software, to make sure the second free-to-play game is running smoothly. “Once the Warzone 2.0 ecosystem is fully stable, and after a small development break for Thanksgiving for the developers who observe this U.S. holiday,” Activision said.
Note that “Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0” will be available while the first game is down, so players will still have something to do throughout the holiday. And to thank players of the first game, Activision said they would receive “a few items” that can be used on the new game.
Once the first game returns, Activision plans to rename it as “Call of Duty: Warzone Caldera” and will co-exist with “Warzone 2.0.”
One of the new features anticipated in “Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0” is the Al Mazrah map. It is the capital city of the fictional country United Republic of Adal, where most of the multiplayer actions in “Modern Warfare II” are happening now.
Activision has emphasized that Al Mazrah will be a huge map. While it has not been released yet as a whole, “Modern Warfare II” players should be familiar with some of its areas already. Some of Al Mazrah’s sub-areas are currently available as multiplayer maps, including Al Bagra Fortress, Embassy, Zarqwa Hydroelectric, Taraq, Sariff Bay, and Sa’id.
