'Battlefield 5' Fans Are Divided over Issues with Historical Accuracy of Developers' Gameplay Decisions

Even before the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 2018 happened earlier this week, publisher Electronic Arts (EA) and its subsidiary developer, DICE, decided to get ahead of the competition and announced the much-awaited “Battlefield 5” release so that the game would get undivided attention from fans.

While the confirmed gameplay features have already gathered good impressions from gamers and critics, a lot of community forums show that its fanbase is deeply divided when it comes to the historical accuracy of the title.

According to PC Gamer, some gamers do not appreciate EA and DICE’s decision to introduce female protagonists to a gameplay that is set in World War 2. Others, meanwhile, questioned the inclusion of a robotic metal arm in the game because it doesn't belong to the era.

As usual, these frustrations and criticisms were expressed by fans through existing community forums and Reddit threads. While these channels have always been some of the trusty venues for fans to voice out their concerns and where developers hear valid feedback, some moderators of these threads decided that the arguments over the game’s historical accuracy had become way out of line. And they have taken action to stop the drama.

Online community moderators saw that one of the fastest ways to remedy this growing issue is by banning comments and posts related to “Battlefield 5’s” historical accuracy altogether. On one of the widely followed “Battlefield 5” sub-Reddit threads, a moderator announced on Thursday, “We're done, its over. New rule: No more b******* about historical accuracy, it's a game, not a history book. [Violators] will have consequences.”

In a follow-up post edit, the same moderator maintained that they are in no way affiliated to DICE or EA. However, they said they have had enough of the ongoing online squabble.

“We get that y'all have valid criticism about battlefield V and the customisation options within the game. Sadly, this subreddit has proven to be unable to have a civil discussion about these things without devolving into name calling and slapfights,” the moderator added.

As of this writing, the said post has been upvoted by only 57 percent of responding sub-Reddit followers.

“Battlefield 5” will be released on Oct. 19 for the PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
