BYD Profits Drop 47%, Tesla Launches Cybertruck Off-Road Guide Amid EV Price War

Tesla rolls out an off-road guide for Cybertruck as BYD confronts a significant profit drop in a competitive EV market.

Amid a fierce EV price war in China, BYD's profits plummeted by 47% in the first quarter of 2024. This contrasts sharply with Tesla's proactive approach, which includes releasing a detailed off-road guide for Cybertruck owners. This guide aims to enhance the driving experience on rugged terrains, responding to increasing consumer interest in all-electric pickup capabilities.

BYD Faces Sales Decline as Tesla Overcomes Challenges in Fierce Q1 EV Market Competition

In a recent report by Teslarati, BYD sold more than 300,000 battery electric cars (BEVs) in the first quarter, a decrease from 526,000 in the fourth quarter of 2024. The Chinese automaker outperformed Tesla in terms of volume deliveries in Q4 2023 but was behind the US electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer in Q1 2024.

In the first quarter, Tesla's deliveries fell 8.5% year over year. Despite facing numerous hurdles, including an arson attack on Tesla Giga Berlin, Tesla delivered 386,810 units in Q1 2024.

BYD delivered about 300,114 beds and 324,284 plug-in hybrid vehicles. The Chinese automaker has likewise experienced a challenging first quarter. China's continuous EV price war has hampered economic growth as automakers compete for a larger market share.

In March 2024, BYD announced decreased revenue growth targets for the year. During a conference, BYD Chairman and President Wang Chuanfu informed investors that the business intends to deliver 3.5 million vehicles this year, including EVs and plug-in hybrids. The company's delivery objective is 20% higher than 3.02 million units in 2023, although it represents much reduced year-over-year growth from 2022 to 2023. BYD hopes to export more than twice the 500,000 units.

"Overall demand for EVs [in China] is set to fall in 2024, as consumers refrain from buying items such as cars due to concerns about job prospects and incomes. A 20% increase will not be easy to achieve, given the current weak market sentiment," said Zhao Zhen, a sales director at Wan Zhuo Auto—a car dealer in Shanghai.

Tesla Enhances Cybertruck Experience with Comprehensive Off-Road Guide for Owners

Tesla's Cybertruck team supplies all-electric pickup truck owners with as much information as possible about their vehicles. The electric vehicle manufacturer recently underscored this when it produced a dedicated off-road guide for the Cybertruck.

A peek at Tesla's Cybertruck off-road guide reveals that the paper offers a detailed look at the all-electric pickup truck's off-road capabilities. It explains the vehicle's various driving modes and helpful off-roading recommendations. It even provides useful beginner-friendly information like an off-road checklist and a spotting guide.

The section on vehicle modifications in Tesla's Cybertruck off-road handbook is critical since it underlines that physical alterations or additions to the vehicle will impact some of the truck's performance and range. This may sound like simple knowledge, but warnings are needed given the unfavorable range assessments from automotive channels like YouTube's Donut Media, which reviewed a modified Cybertruck.

According to Cybertruck Lead Engineer Wes Morrill in a post on X, Tesla created the Cybertruck off-road handbook to provide a comprehensive overview of the all-electric pickup truck's capability and explain why and how to utilize it. Morrill also stated that the book is meant to make off-roading more accessible to drivers who had never considered it until they received the Cybertruck.

Such a paper would be valuable to many Cybertruck drivers, particularly those unfamiliar with off-road driving. After all, the Cybertruck is a vehicle aimed at mainstream customers, especially individuals who are only experienced with driving on smooth, paved roads. This is evidenced by viral videos showing Cybertrucks becoming trapped in snow or other terrain in recent months.

According to EV watchers, most viral "cyberstuck" films that made media headlines were primarily the result of driver inexperience. With the Cybertruck off-road guidance in place, vehicle drivers should be able to operate all-electric pickup trucks more efficiently.
