This year could be less eventful for Apple’s existing product lines, including iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch. The company is reportedly focusing its efforts and resources on the imminent launch of its long-awaited AR/VR headset, which could happen in a few months.
The latest on the Apple AR/VR headset comes from Bloomberg’s Power On newsletter, as reported by Mark Gurman, who has been a key source of information about the product. After several delays and being in development for seven years, the journalist said the device is now planned to be unveiled sometime in spring.
It was not specified whether Apple is holding its usual spring launch event, which typically happens in March or April. But Gurman noted that the Apple AR/VR headset announcement could take place before the next Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), which will likely happen in early June.
The same report also emphasized that the Apple AR/VR headset is slated to be the highlight product from the company this year. But this could also mean there would be minimal significant upgrades planned for products under the Apple Watch, iPad, and Mac families.
It also appears that the Apple AR/VR headset’s operating system, internally named Borealis, is nearly finished. The tech giant has reportedly shown the device to a few “high-profile software developers” so they can get started on third-party apps for the device. Gurman said the software would be officially called xrOS, while the device might be named “Reality Pro.”
Apple still has plenty of details to finalize regarding the launch of its first AR/VR headset, per the report. But tech fans may recall earlier claims that the Apple AR/VR headset is slated to be a niche product that could be priced as much as $3,000. There are also reports that the company intends to ship it in smaller volume relative to how many iPhones and iPads it sells annually.
While the Apple AR/VR headset is rumored to be unveiled in spring, the report does not expect the device to be available until fall.
