Christoph Waltz is the latest cast member to offer fans insight on the fate of “Alita: Battle Angel 2.” Like other people attached to the making of the first film, Waltz also expressed he would love to reprise his role in a sequel. However, he has a rather disappointing update about the status of the second movie.

Alita: Battle Angel 2’: Is the sequel happening?

It might be fair to call “Alita: Battle Angel” movie a late bloomer considering how demands for a sequel came later and did not exactly manifest in the ticket sales of the first movie. This then puts the fate of “Alita: Battle Angel 2” in quite an interesting position.

Waltz confirmed what the Alita Army has been hearing in previous months. First, the decision now lies in the hands of Disney executives after the studio acquired 20th Century Fox (the company that distributed the film) last year. Second, and this might hurt a little for the Alita Army, Waltz has not heard anything about the making of “Alita: Battle Angel 2.” This means that the future of the sequel still hangs in the balance despite the support it has been getting after it was released in Blu-ray/DVD, cable channels, and streaming platforms.

“I haven’t heard anything and I’m a little disappointed and surprised that I haven’t heard a thing so far, because I know that it has followers,” Waltz told Collider about “Alita: Battle Angel 2.” “Maybe it doesn’t fit into the Disneyfication, but I have no clue.”

The first movie garnered more than $400 million in the worldwide box office. However, that does not seem like a huge amount when compared to its reported budget of $170 million.

Alita: Battle Angel 2’ release date, cast rumors

In the same interview, Waltz said he would love to reprise his role as Dr. Dyson Ido. And if anyone other than Alita (Rosa Salazar) is very likely to return in “Alita: Battle Angel 2,” it should be Ido. He was unharmed when the first movie ended and considering Alita’s very possible adventure into Zalem, Ido would be a helpful character.

Meanwhile, determining the “Alita: Battle Angel 2” release date is practically impossible, even more so with Disney still not confirming the sequel’s production. But if one would have to imagine, if the movie is confirmed within 2020, it might take three to four more years before its premiere.
