With the announcement that the cast of Emmys winner 30 Rock will be reuniting for a one-hour TV special for NBC this July, questions of why the series ended also resurfaced.
Many asked if the comedy show was cancelled and why. 30 Rock creator and star Tina Fey confirmed that it was not cancelled and that the series had just run its course. This was echoed by Fey's castmate, Alec Baldwin.
Fey had played the role of Liz Lemon, a showrunner of a show dubbed as The Girlie Show, while Baldwin acted as Jack Donaghy, the network executive.
30 Rock followed the story of Lemon and how she juggled the show, keeping Donaghy happy, dealing with a frustrating star and handling the show's writers.
The series had its ups and downs but nevertheless received a total of 103 Emmys nominations and winning 11 including the primetime Emmy award for Outstanding Comedy Series in 2007, just a year after its season 1's premiere.
It also guested A-list stars such as Matt Damon and Jennifer Aniston but in the words of Fey, all good things must come to and end and that the show's story arc had run its course.
As for Baldwin, he said in a Rolling Stone interview that although he was willing to stay on the show for as long as it is still being aired, its end was a necessity because the cast, including him, had shifted their focus to other priorities.
This may be the case, still it will be exciting to see the cast’s reunion even for just an hour on July 16. Aside from Fey and Baldwin, also present will be Jane Krakowski, Tracy Morgan and Jack McBrayer.
The 30 Rock cast will be hosting the NBC’s virtual upfront event and will be aired on NBC at 8/7c and will be rebroadcasted on CNBC, Bravo, SyFy, USA Network and E!
