More well-known sources are now saying that the fourth generation of iPhone SE would feature major design changes. Apple is speculated to switch to a more recent form factor that does not have thick bezels for the upcoming iPhone SE 4.
Renowned display industry analyst Ross Young shared an update on his iPhone SE 4 predictions, telling MacRumors that the device could feature a display notch. In an earlier forecast, Young suggested that the mid-range phone could also adopt a hole-punch cutout, similar to the iPhone 14 Pro models, by 2024.
Young also expects the iPhone SE 4 to have a 6.1-inch display. This lines up with earlier reports and forecasts from other analysts that the upcoming device could have a similar form factor as iPhone XR.
Leaker Jon Prosser previously claimed that the iPhone SE 4 could be a “rebranded” version of the iPhone XR. The 2018 device had a 6.1-inch display with an all-screen design. While it was sold at a slightly lower price than the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max in the same year, the iPhone XR was also equipped with Face ID.
An all-screen design for the iPhone SE 4 would mean that Apple is also getting rid of the thick bezels and the home button. But it is still unknown if Apple would bring the Face ID technology to the mid-range phone.
Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted in 2019 that Apple could integrate the Touch ID components with the power button in a future iPhone SE model. While this has yet to happen, it is a possible design choice Apple could make for the iPhone SE 4 if it wants to keep the Face ID exclusive to its premium hardware products.
Apple fans have already seen that approach when the tech giant brought the all-screen design to the iPad Air. The latest generations of iPad Air have already ditched the thick bezels and home button, but it still only features Touch ID through the power button.
The release window for the iPhone SE 4 still needs some clarification. Varying reports suggest the device could launch with these design changes next year or in 2024.
