Apple has officially entered the foldable smartphone market with the launch of the iPhone Duo, a $1,999 premium device unveiled Wednesday during the company’s annual September product event.
The iPhone Duo, Apple’s first foldable iPhone, uses a passport-style design featuring a 7.6-inch inner display and a 5.4-inch outer screen. Pre-orders are scheduled to open on Oct. 16, while sales will begin Oct. 23 across more than 70 countries and regions.
Apple equipped the foldable phone with its new A20 Pro processor, which the company says delivers up to 35% stronger sustained performance compared with the iPhone 17 Pro. Other features include a dual-battery system and 48-megapixel main and ultra-wide cameras.
The device runs iOS 27, introducing software designed specifically for the foldable form factor. Among the additions is Split View multitasking, allowing users to operate apps side by side on the larger internal display.
Starting at $1,999 for 256GB of storage and offering configurations of up to 2TB, the iPhone Duo becomes the most expensive iPhone Apple has released.
“iPhone Duo is the most transformational change to iPhone since the original,” CEO John Ternus said.
The launch also marked Ternus’ first major iPhone event as Apple CEO after he succeeded Tim Cook on Sept. 1.
Apple expanded its premium lineup with the iPhone 18 Pro, starting at $1,199, and the iPhone 18 Pro Max at $1,299. Orders open Sept. 12 ahead of availability on Sept. 18. Notably, Apple did not unveil a standard iPhone 18, signaling a stronger focus on higher-priced devices.
The company also introduced AirPods 5 starting at $129, Apple Watch Series 12 at $399 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 at $799.
Apple shares initially dropped as much as 2% during the presentation before reversing course and gaining more than 0.5% afterward.
Evercore ISI analyst Amit Daryanani said the new lineup could sustain iPhone momentum and encourage upgrades, particularly among customers using devices that are more than three years old.
