iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Plus will feature low-power backplane technology integrated into OLED displays for the upcoming year, introducing ProMotion to Apple's standard iPhone models.
Transition to ProMotion: Elevating iPhone Displays with LTPO Technology
According to a Teslarati website report, low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) panels are utilized in the current iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus. In contrast, the more advanced low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) panels are found in the iPhone 15 Pro variants. ProMotion, supported by LTPO panels, enables the display to scale up to a 120Hz refresh rate when necessary for fluid scrolling and video content.
Because ProMotion enables the display to scale down to a more power-efficient 1Hz refresh rate, the screens of the iPhone 15 Pro remain illuminated even when the device is locked. This includes the Lock Screen's time, widgets, notifications, and wallpaper.
Apple is anticipated to retain the less advanced LTPS panels in this year's iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus to maintain differentiation between its standard and Pro models. As a result, the 2025 iPhone series will be the first in the lineup to feature ProMotion and always-on displays.
According to The Elec, BOE, a Chinese supplier, reportedly hopes to provide LTPO panels for the iPhone 17 series to Apple. However, it is still being determined whether BOE will be able to meet Apple's quality control standards and achieve the necessary production capacity.
Strategic Partnerships and Display Enhancements Shape Future iPhone Models
Apple is expected to seek alternative suppliers, such as Samsung and LG Display, for the LTPO panels if BOE fails to fulfill the necessary criteria. Apple will continue to rely on BOE for the LTPS-based OLED panels found in its previous iPhone models and the purported iPhone SE 4.
As per the assessment of display analyst Ross Young, the iPhone 16 Pro models introduced this year will have an elevated aspect ratio of 19.6:9. Subsequently, this modification will be reflected in the standard iPhone 17 models. It is anticipated that the dimensions of the devices will rise from 6.12 to 6.69 to 6.27 to 6.86 inches, respectively. This results in a 2.5 percent increase in display size across both devices.
In conclusion, the standard iPhone 17 models will likely receive a significant panel upgrade, including larger screens, LTPO for ProMotion, and an always-on display.
