Elizabeth Caldwell

Dr Elizabeth Caldwell joined Huddersfield in July 2014 as an Academic Skills Tutor in the School of Art, Design and Architecture.

Beth’s research involves social and cultural studies of science and medicine, with a particular focus on education. Her current projects examine disciplinary cultures and boundaries, the representation of gender in STEMM, and visual culture in science.

Beth is a graduate of University College London where she successfully completed her PhD in Anthropological Genetics and her thesis was accepted without change. She also holds two first class BSc (Hons) degrees in Human Sciences and Herbal Medicine.

After finishing her PhD, Beth worked in journal publishing and then started lecturing in Study Skills and English for Academic Purposes, first at the University of Central Lancashire and then at the University of Huddersfield and University Campus Oldham. She has worked as an Academic Skills Tutor at Huddersfield in the School of Human and Health Sciences and the School of Education and Professional Development, in addition to her current role in the School of Art, Design and Architecture.

Her research interests lie in the interdisciplinary field of Science and Technology Studies (STS). In particular, she is interested in the cultural products of science and her current research explores the dissemination and consumption of imagery relating to science and medicine. Her current projects include investigating the representation of gender in science books for children, as well as looking at the use of visual metaphor in children’s books about health.
