Newbold's research focuses on immigration, health and transportation issues. He received his PhD from McMaster in 1994. He was an Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign 1994-2000, before returning to McMaster in 2000. He has held guest scholar positions at the University of California San Diego and the University of Glasgow. He is currently the Director of McMaster's School of Earth, Environment and Society.
