Zelensky Invites Putin to Direct Peace Talks, Warns Ukraine Will Continue Fighting if No Progress Is Made

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has issued an open letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin, proposing a direct meeting aimed at ending more than four years of war between Ukraine and Russia. The letter, released on Thursday and shared with several international partners, including the United States, outlines Kyiv’s vision for a peace process while making clear that Ukraine is prepared to continue defending itself if diplomatic efforts fail.

In the letter, Zelensky argued that many Russians have become increasingly weary of the ongoing conflict due to repeated Ukrainian drone and missile strikes, rising inflation, and fuel shortages. He suggested that growing public fatigue inside Russia could create an opportunity for meaningful peace negotiations.

The Ukrainian leader emphasized that now is the right time to pursue diplomacy, noting that global attention has recently shifted toward tensions involving Iran. According to Zelensky, waiting for international focus to return fully to Europe would be a mistake. He stated that any serious peace initiative must begin at the frontline and include a comprehensive ceasefire that remains in place throughout negotiations.

Zelensky also said the United States has the capability to monitor and verify a ceasefire along the current line of contact. As part of his proposal, he called for a specific date to be set for a face-to-face meeting with Putin and suggested neutral locations such as Switzerland, Turkey, or countries in the Arab world that have historically hosted peace negotiations.

Urging the Russian president to pursue a diplomatic solution, Zelensky wrote that ending the war requires courage and decisive action. He stressed that Ukraine seeks peace through direct engagement between the two leaders but warned that the country will continue fighting for its survival if Russia declines the offer.

The Ukrainian president also hinted that prolonged conflict could have political consequences within Russia, pointing to historical examples where public exhaustion with war led to significant change.

The Kremlin confirmed it had received Zelensky’s letter and said President Putin would be briefed on its contents. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha described the proposal as a serious and practical roadmap toward ending the war and expressed hope for a constructive response from Moscow.

The latest peace proposal comes as international efforts to resolve the Russia-Ukraine war continue, with global leaders closely monitoring whether direct talks between Zelensky and Putin could create a path toward a lasting ceasefire and eventual peace agreement.
