‘Westworld’ season 2 has been renewed on HBO and is expected to premiere some time in 2018. Co-showrunner Jonathan Nolan hinted that the series may explore other worlds beyond the titular park introduced in season 1.
According to Cinema Blend, the incoming season of HBO’s newest science-fiction, drama and Western television series is set to explore other worlds featured in the original 1973 film of the same name written and directed by American novelist Michael Crichton.
The first season delved into a technologically advanced Western-themed amusement park populated by androids known as Hosts and visited by high-paying Guests. The park was created in a way that Guests are safe from possible retaliation from Hosts as they proceed to do whatever they desire within the confines of the man-made locale.
According to Mashable, Delos also operated "Roman World" and "Medieval World" in the original 1973 film in addition to Westworld. The 1976 sequel introduced a park known as “Futureworld.” When asked about the existence of other parks in the television adaptation during the show’s panel at the 2016 New York Comic Con, Nolan replied, "You said Roman World and Medieval World, right? No."
This reportedly implied that the showrunner may have his own parks in mind beyond what Crichton initially crafted.
During a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Nolan admitted that they sought to move into different worlds besides the one introduced in season 1. He said, “I think most television series … and I mean no disrespect by this. I've worked in television for years and I love all of the different ways you can build a show. But for the most part, you get through the pilot, you build your sets, you hire your cast, and it's working, and you just want to hang out in that moment and enjoy that moment with that iteration of the story you're telling.”
Nolan continued, “For Lisa [Joy] and myself, with this show, we never had any intention of staying in one place. We don't want to shoot on the same sets for 10 years. We want to blow the sets up and move on to another piece of the story. So we said when we started working on the series that we wanted to be ambitious. We wanted each season to increase in that ambition and in the scope of the show.”
He added, “It also follows the story of our hosts. Their lives begin in loops, and then expand and change and grow. It's an origin of a new species. We want to follow that story all the way to the bitter end.”
‘Westworld’ season 2 was renewed on HBO last November 2016 and is expected to return sometime in 2018.
