‘Vikings’ season 4’s part 2 is scheduled to premiere in History on November 30, 2016. Alex Hogh Andersen, who plays Ivar the Boneless in the series, explained during a new interview that Ragnar’s return will inspire Ivar to become the next powerful leader of the Vikings.
The preview video opened with Ragnar’s (Travis Fimmel) return. He is met by his now grown-up sons and singles out Ivar in the crowd. He approaches his crippled son, who looks delighted to see him again, and says, “Hello, Ivar. There’s no mistaking you.”
According to Monsters and Critics, Andersen reveals that the incoming season promises a host of new developments for the series’ storyline as well as its characters. He says, “This particular season, there are a lot of new things going on. Four brothers grow up and that’s a big thing. It’s interesting to see that generation shift – that jump in time.”
The video cuts to a scene where Ivar and his brothers go into a discussion about Ragnar’s possible return to which the others say they would kill him if he show’s his disgraced face again. However, Ivar defends their father saying, “He wanted to be famous. Isn’t that more important?” The others insisted that Ragnar betrayed their family’s name after his defeat.
Ivar insisted, “He is our father and that is the end of it.” Andersen continued, “Ivar is still that teenage boy who needs love. He is all by himself and he is left alone by the only one that he really needed… his father.”
Andersen went on to reveal that Ragnar’s return will be his character’s motivation to rise into greatness as the next great leader of their clan. He said, “So when his father returns, that’s a huge step for him. Ragnar fills him with ambition to develop and do something, go out into the world – not just dragging himself around.”
Series creator Michael Hirst revealed that the older Ivar will develop into a “formidable character”, who compensates for his crippled state with his exceptional intelligence by becoming into a highly-skilled military strategist.
Since Ivar is a cripple in a Viking society, he is perceived as a nobody. This prompted Ivar to fight his way to greatness by not letting his handicap get in the way of his ambitions, according to Carter Matt. He also becomes one of the most feared as he is very good with psychological warfare.
Hirst teased during a previous interview that Ivar the Boneless is set to become one of the key characters in the series. He said, “Ivar the Boneless may be the most famous Viking of all, partly because he’s got such a cool name. But in terms of this show, I knew he was going to be a major character and we got so lucky that we cast a young actor who is absolutely brilliant.”
‘Vikings’ is a historical drama series written and created by Michael Hirst for the History channel. Season 4 was split into two parts with 10 episodes each. The second part set to premiere on History in November 30, 2016.
