Trump Praises Nigeria’s Tinubu, Signaling Stronger U.S.-Nigeria Security Ties

U.S. President Donald Trump has praised Nigerian President Bola Tinubu for his efforts to combat violence and strengthen security, marking a notable improvement in relations between Washington and Abuja after months of tensions over the treatment of Christians in Nigeria.

In a letter dated July 6 and released by Nigeria’s presidency on Wednesday, Trump commended Tinubu’s leadership and his commitment to addressing violence affecting Christian communities. The U.S. president described it as an honor to support Nigeria in its fight against terrorism and efforts to build a safer and more prosperous nation.

“I appreciate your decisive leadership on behalf of the Nigerian people,” Trump wrote, adding that he stands with Nigeria in confronting terrorist threats and promoting national stability.

The message reflects a shift in U.S.-Nigeria relations. In late 2025, Trump criticized the Nigerian government for what he described as insufficient protection for Christians facing extremist attacks. At the time, he warned that the United States could reduce aid to Nigeria and consider additional measures, including possible military action.

Nigeria rejected those claims, maintaining that insecurity affects citizens regardless of religion and that the government is working to protect all communities from militant violence.

Security cooperation between the two countries has since expanded. According to Nigeria’s presidency, Washington and Abuja established a joint security working group last year to improve intelligence sharing, military training, and coordinated operations against extremist groups operating in the region.

The release of Trump’s letter also follows a recent visit to Abuja by U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Africa Frank Garcia. During the trip, both sides discussed ways to deepen security collaboration and strengthen bilateral ties.

The latest developments suggest that counterterrorism cooperation and regional security have become key priorities for both governments, signaling renewed momentum in U.S.-Nigeria diplomatic and defense relations.
