President Donald Trump has appointed newly confirmed FBI Director Kash Patel as the acting head of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), according to sources. Patel, a Trump loyalist and gun rights advocate, will oversee both agencies amid growing political tensions.
Despite opposition from Democrats and moderate Republicans over his calls for retribution against Trump critics, Patel secured enough support to lead the FBI. His appointment signals a shift in federal law enforcement priorities, particularly regarding firearm regulations. Patel has received backing from the Gun Owners of America lobby group, suggesting a potential overhaul of the ATF’s regulatory role.
During his campaign, Trump criticized the ATF for excessive enforcement against gun owners. Attorney General Pam Bondi reinforced this stance by abruptly firing the agency’s long-time chief counsel, Pamela Hicks, citing bias against gun owners. Bondi has redirected ATF’s focus toward illegal immigration enforcement, further aligning with Trump’s agenda.
Patel’s dual leadership mirrors other key Trump administration appointments. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also serves as acting head of USAID, which Trump aims to dissolve. Russ Vought, the director of the Office of Management and Budget, leads the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, another agency Trump plans to dismantle. Additionally, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and Energy Secretary Chris Wright co-chair the National Energy Dominance Council.
Trump’s reshaping of federal agencies underscores his commitment to deregulation and realigning government priorities. Patel’s leadership is expected to drive significant changes in federal law enforcement, particularly in gun policy and immigration enforcement.
