Fans looking forward to the second half of “The Walking Dead” season 9 will have to wait for a couple of months before seeing new episodes again. On a more positive note, they will be delighted to know that the Whisperers are completely taking over in 2019.
“The Walking Dead” season 9 will feature one of the biggest developments in terms of storyline. Fans who have read the same title comic book series where the TV show is based from have been looking forward to seeing the Whisperers on the small screen adaptation.
The major role of the Whisperers could not have been more emphasized by the release of a “The Walking Dead” season 9 teaser earlier this week. AMC released a teaser photo featuring the Whisperers leader named Alpha, played by “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” star Samantha Morton.
Alpha’s group is a completely different player than the other villainous characters introduced prior to “The Walking Dead” season 9. Per the comic books, the Whisperers are both a threat to the survivors and the walkers. They kill walkers and use their skins to mask their scents and appearances. But they also attack other groups of survivors for supplies and under the principle that only the strongest may survive in this post-apocalyptic world.
What makes the introduction of the Whisperers even more interesting in “The Walking Dead” season 9 is the fact that the characters from Hilltop and Alexandria are still reeling from losing their respective leaders. Maggie (Lauren Cohan) left while Rick (Andrew Lincoln) was presumed dead, though he clearly survived, in earlier episodes.
Strong leadership has proven to be essential in the characters’ survival in previous seasons. Showrunner Angela Kang also confirmed that there will be no time jump when “The Walking Dead” season 9 returns on Sunday, Feb. 10 on AMC. This means the remaining protagonists will have to learn to cope with the changes very quickly. And if Alpha’s freaky zombie mask is not frightening enough, note that Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) is also a free man when the series comes back in 2019.
