Fox's television series based on Marvel's X-Men franchise may be picking up in popularity, with the studio behind it asked for additional episodes when the series was renewed for “The Gifted” season 2.
“The Gifted” season 2's first episode, “eMergence,” has already aired and opened with Reeva Payge's (Grace Byer) coup over the Hellfire Club. Six months later, the original mutant underground organization is shown preparing for Polaris (Emma Dumont) giving birth to her baby, Dawn. With the show now following the different paths taken by those who have followed the Hellfire Club and those who chose to stay with the original mutant underground, the show is ready to take on an ambitious storyline that could pair mutants against other mutants.
Fans who are excited about the potential stories that “The Gifted” season 2's current setup could create may be wondering just how much of the possible stories the show can fit in the current season. TV Line released preview images for “The Gifted Season 2,” along with the news that the show's current season will have 16 episodes chock full of stories set in the X-men universe.
While an additional three episodes rather than a full 22-episode order may seem a bit short, “The Gifted” season 2 can hopefully gain enough traction for a longer third season, or a mid-season order that will fill the installment's episode count. Still, the jump from a 13-episode first season to “The Gifted” season 2's 16-episode count is definitely a step-up for the series, considering the cancellation of similar shows set in the Marvel Universe such as “Inhumans.” Hopefully, the show's good performance will help reintroduce the X-men as a favorable franchise to the television market.
Fans looking forward to finding out more about Dawn's importance for the future of the series can catch “The Gifted” Season 2's next episode when it airs tonight, Oct. 2.
