“The Big Bang Theory” is a show that is known to capitalize on awkward situations from time to time. However, it seems the start of season 10 will feature that worst/best of such moments. Picking up from where the season 9 finale ended, the premiere will involve the budding romance between Sheldon’s mother Mary and Leonard’s dad Alfred. Both parents are single, but that doesn’t mean that the two resident geniuses are okay with it.
As showrunner Steve Molaro explains when he spoke with TVLine after the season finale had aired, the main source for the awkwardness that is sure to be a huge factor next season is the implication that the parents of both protagonists had sex. Understandably, this is not something that the sons are very comfortable with.
“It’s just a weird situation,” Molaro said. “Anytime anybody’s parents are involved in anything sexual, it’s not something we like to think about as humans. So we’re kind of tapping into that.”
Since this element of discomfort is a major source of comedy, the show’s producers will naturally milk it for all its worth come the first episode or two of the next season. So expect major parental hijinks.
Aside from Mary, Alfred and Leonard’s mother Beverly, it seems viewers might finally see Penny’s mother and brother who have been AWOL so far. Naturally, Wyatt won’t want to miss the formal wedding ceremony of his little girl and it would be weird if he went without his wife and son who fans know for a fact are still around. Unfortunately, Molaro was vague on that point.
“It’s a little early to say for sure, but we would very much like to meet Penny’s mom and her brother, as well,” Molaro said.
Regarding Bernadette and Howard’s parts, there’s speculation that Howard’s father might make an appearance. Molaro spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about it and said that it’s not a priority at the moment.
“The Big Bang Theory” Season 10 will premiere on CBS this fall.
