‘Stranger Things’ season 2 is set to be a “bigger” and “darker” character-focused season as teased by executive producer and director Shawn Levy. Meanwhile, ‘The Sixth Sense’ director M. Night Shyamalan expressed his desire to get involved in the upcoming season.
During an interview with Vanity Fair, Levy revealed that the upcoming season of Netflix’s science-fiction and supernatural drama will be “bigger” and “darker” compared to its predecessor. He said, “Season 2 is bigger and potentially darker in its stakes… The threat, which in Season 1 was to Will Byers, has grown. That’s all I’m going to say!”
He continued, “But, I will say Season 2 has a bigger cast and is definitely loyal to the kind of magical storytelling that we established in the first season. It’s character-based and still about our core group of characters.”
The breakout television series stars Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Natalia Dyer, Cara Buono, Charlie Heaton, and Matthew Modine. Noah Schnapp and Joe Keery, who play Will Byers and Steve Harrington respectively, have also been promoted to series regulars as well. Joining the original cast of characters for season 2 are Brett Gelman, Sean Astin, Paul Reiser, Linnea Berthelsen, Sadie Sink, and Dacre Montgomery.
Schnapp dropped a potentially massive hint on the fate of his character Will saying, “You’ll be seeing more of me. I’ll be there… In the last episode, I threw up a slug, so Season 2 begins with what happens from there. There may have been some effect on him. I may or may not have turned into a monster. You’ll have to watch to find out.”
According to Inverse, it was speculated that Will may transform into a Demogorgon, a monster from the Upside Down that the main characters had to deal with in the first season. Will was last seen excusing himself from supper prepared by his mother Joyce to head to the bathroom. There, he coughed up what looked to be a slug as the Upside Down flashed before his eyes momentarily.
Season 2 is set to pick up a year after the events of its predecessor and will be set in 1984. Creators Matt and Ross Duffer previously hinted that although the show will still be set in the small town of Hawkins, Indiana, it will expand its locations.
Meanwhile, M. Night Shyamalan expressed his desire to direct the series’ second run on Netflix during an interview with Digital Spy. He is best known for his work on supernatural-thriller and horror films such as 1999’s ‘The Sixth Sense,’ 2002’s ‘Signs,’ 2004’s ‘The Village,’ and 2006’s ‘The Lady in the Water.’
The Duffer Brothers made their television debut as writers for the science-fiction television series ‘Wayward Pines,’ where Shyamalan served as executive producer. Shyamalan said, "My boys who do Stranger Things, they did Wayward Pines for me… They were round my house and I was like, 'Well, you can hire me back guys!'"
‘Stranger Things’ season 2 is expected to debut on Netflix sometime in 2017.
