‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ is set to feature Michael Chernus as the film’s first official villain the Tinkerer. Sony is yet to confirm Michael Keaton’s involvement as the Vulture in the upcoming film.
According to Deadline, Chernus has joined the new cast of Jon Watts’ upcoming ‘Spider-Man’ film to play the first official villain. He is set to portray Phineas Mason a.k.a. the Tinkerer, a brilliant scientist and engineer.
Chernus is best known for his roles in several television series including NBC’s ‘Mercy’, WGN America’s ‘Manhattan’, and Netflix’s ‘Orange Is The New Black’. He also appeared in full-feature films such as Barry Sonnenfeld’s ‘Men In Black 3’, Tony Gilroy’s ‘The Bourne Legacy’, Paul Greengrass’ ‘Captain Phillips’, and Cameron Crowe’s ‘Aloha’.
His character the Tinkerer is an evil genius inventor with extensive knowledge of multiple disciplines. He is also highly skilled in the design and manufacture of deadly weapons and devices for supervillains such as Mysterio, Grim Reaper, Black Cat, Beetle and Hammerhead.
According to NME, the Tinkerer is one of Spider-Man’s oldest enemies. He was created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko and made his first appearance on the DC comic book “The Amazing Spider-Man #2” published in 1963.
Logan Marshall-Green of ‘Prometheus’ fame was originally attached to portray the Tinkerer but this was never confirmed.
Chernus joins Tom Holland as Peter Parker a.k.a. Spider-Man, Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark a.k.a. Iron Man, Marisa Tomei as Aunt May, Zendaya as Michelle, and Tony Revolori as Flash Thompson. Michael Keaton was also cast as the antagonistic Adrian Toomes a.k.a. The Vulture but his involvement has not been confirmed by Sony as of the present, according to the Independent.
‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ is an upcoming action-adventure and fantasy film intended as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). It is directed by Jon Watts and produced by Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal. Eric Hauserman Carroll is serving as co-producer with Stan Lee and Matthew Tolmach executive producing.
