Impeached South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol was arrested on Wednesday following a failed attempt to impose military law in late 2024, according to local media reports. Investigators successfully executed an arrest warrant after entering the Presidential compound for the second time this month.
Yoon faces charges of insurrection for his controversial martial law declaration in December, which sparked widespread protests and backlash from citizens and policymakers. The move led to a parliamentary vote to impeach him, with Deputy Prime Minister Choi Sang-mok stepping in as acting President to restore governance.
South Korea’s markets, shaken by the political turmoil in December, showed signs of recovery following the arrest. The benchmark KOSPI index rose 0.5%, while the Korean won remained steady against the US dollar.
This development marks a pivotal moment in South Korean politics, offering hope for stability after a period of uncertainty. Yoon’s trial is expected to dominate headlines as the nation moves forward.
