Song Joong Ki: Actor cast and prepared for ‘Space Sweepers’ before marriage to Song Hye Kyo

Song Joong Ki has a new movie that is set to premiere soon. This is South Korea’s very first sci-fi flick and based on the video teasers, it is very high quality and at par with Hollywood made movies of the same genre.

There is an interesting story begging Song Joong Ki’s casting in “Space Sweepers” and it turned out that he has known about the movie even before he got married to Song Hye Kyo. The 34-year-old actor shared this info during the recent online press conference for the movie.

Joong Ki shares a behind-the-scene story about his casting

Last week, the press conference for the sci-fi thriller was held and during the discussion, Song Hye Kyo’s ex-husband disclosed that he actually knows about this project since 2001. This was the time when he was still filming “A Werewolf Boy” which was also written by Jo Sung Hee, the director and writer of “Space Sweepers.”

He said that he heard about the movie’s concept and instantly became interested in it. He was also thrilled and liked the fact that it will be South Korea’s first flick of its kind.

"Even while we were filming ‘A Werewolf Boy’ nine years ago, I’d heard that he (Jo Sung Hee) was preparing for a space-themed sci-fi film,” Soompi quoted the actor as saying. “I thought the concept of space junk was new, and I was attracted to the challenge in making South Korea’s first space-themed sci-fi film."

How the space-themed movie was born

Director Jo confirmed that “Space Sweepers” has been in the works for a decade now. This is because he thought of this movie and made plans for it since 10 years ago. He narrated that the idea was born after hearing news that the junks in space are growing at a fast rate and this is a dangerous situation.

“Around 10 years ago, I was having a meal with a friend and talking about this and that,” director Jo Sung Hee shared at the presscon. “I’d heard that space junk, debris from space missions, was spreading at a rapid and dangerous rate and that it was a problem even now.”

He went on to say that he started the film with the concept of people in space who collect those dangerous junks aboard a really fast spaceship. "I started writing the script wondering how Koreans, who possess a tenacious mentality, would approach this problem," he added.

At any rate, Song Joong Ki is the lead actor in “Space Sweepers” and he is supported by Kim Tae Ri, Yoo Hae Jin, Jin Seon Kyu and more. The story is set in space in the year 2092.
