‘Sherlock’ season 4 revealed baby Watson in a newly released photograph depicting Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sherlock, Martin Freeman’s John Watson, and Amanda Abbington’s Mary Watson in a family portrait. Meanwhile, Toby Jones’ Culverton Smith is revealed to be the most evil villain on the series.
A new batch of images released for season 4 featured a new character in John and Mary Watson’s lives. In the photographs posted on USA Today, baby Watson made an appearance alongside his proud parents and Uncle Sherlock. John held baby Watson in a baby carrier while Mary and Sherlock stood beside him in what looked to be a family portrait.
Another image showed Toby Jones’ antagonistic Culverton Smith sneering at the camera clad in a bright blue suit. According to the Independent, executive producer Steven Moffatt revealed in a previous interview, “He’s the darkest villain we’ve had. There was always something charming and engaging about Moriarty. There was something fascinating and actually amoral, rather than immoral, about Charles Augustus Magnussen. This guy is the purest evil.”
Culverton Smith is a creepy and haughty yet intellectual man, who is a member of the Moriarty Club. The character was introduced in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's "The Dying Detective" from 1913 and was adapted in film and television over the years. He is known to be an expert on tropical disease as well as Arthropodology, Myriapodology and Entomology.
Although Culverton was portrayed by various actors in his time on the big and small screen, the character remains undoubtedly sinister, according to Den of Geek. He disregards human life and is said to be the series’ darkest villain to date.
Season 4’s official synopsis released by BBC reads, “[Season 4] begins with the nation’s favourite detective, the mercurial Sherlock Holmes, back once more on British soil, as Doctor Watson and his wife Mary prepare for their biggest ever challenge – becoming parents for the first time.”
‘Sherlock’ season 4 is scheduled to debut in the U.S. and the U.K. on January 1, 2017. It will premiere with an episode entitled “The Six Thatchers,” directed by Rachel Talalay and written by Mark Gatiss. Like previous seasons, it will comprise of three episodes.
