The third season of “Santa Clarita Diet” is now streaming on Netflix. This means fans will soon be asking if season 4 is going to happen.
It might be too early to speculate on this matter but even the people attached to making the show has also started thinking about its future. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, showrunner Victor Fresco explained why he thinks if Netflix orders “Santa Clarita Diet” season 4, it would also be the show’s last installment.
“I could see a scenario where the fourth year is the last year. I sort of imagined it going five years — that seemed about right to me,” Fresco said about the prospect of making “Santa Clarita Diet” season 4. “I think the relationship is interesting and fun and emotional and loving enough that you could want to stay with the Hammonds for a long time because they're wonderful, so there's always stuff there for us to mine.”
Fresco also explained that having a much bigger plot for “Santa Clarita Diet” season 4, even season 5 will not be a problem. “I don't have specifics for what that would be yet, but I have no doubt that we could come up with something really juicy,” he added.
However, the series creator also implied even he is unsure whether or not Netflix will order “Santa Clarita Diet” season 4. In the same report, he noted that the streaming service company seemingly has an unspoken rule that comedy shows and sitcoms are not meant to last beyond three seasons.
Looking forward, Fresco is also open to the idea of finding a new home for “Santa Clarita Diet” season 4 if ever Netflix cancels it in the coming months. However, the process in doing it could be tricky since the show is an originally-produced title by Netflix.
The series creator also admitted that “Santa Clarita Diet” season 4 would become more expensive to produce compared to season 3. And fans may recall that Netflix has no problem canceling a widely popular show if its production costs a lot — case in point: “The Get Down” and “Sense8.”
