Samsung is expected to unveil the next generation of foldable smartphones under its Galaxy Z series. But a new report claims that the company is working on a third device that could feature quite a unique form factor.
Several reports have emerged online recently suggesting that Samsung could be preparing a third device to expand its Galaxy Z lineup. A machine-translated Galaxy Club article says the publication received information that Samsung is "seriously working" on a third foldable smartphone that could launch sometime this year.
The same report noted that Samsung does not simply have a prototype being tested. The company is rumored to be serious about launching the third foldable phone because it is reportedly close to entering production, along with the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4.
Galaxy Club says the mystery foldable phone is codenamed "N4," while the Galaxy Z Flip 4 is "B4" and the Galaxy Z Fold 4 is "Q4." The report speculates that the new device's codename means it is designed to be offered alongside the anticipated next-generation Samsung fold and flip phones.
While the report expects the third foldable phone to have a more unique form factor, it is mostly based on the concepts Samsung Display has shown in previous events. The company has exhibited slidable and rollable displays as part of its Flex OLED lineup. But there is no telling when these display technologies will become a reality.
Should Samsung proceed with introducing the third foldable phone, the report noted that it might not be widely available at first. The company is expected to produce the mystery device in limited quantities, compared to Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4, just like how new devices were introduced in the past.
Well-known leaker Ice Universe also reported earlier this week about a new Samsung foldable display rumored to be codenamed "Diamond." But the post has been deleted, while noted display analyst Ross Young said "Diamond" refers to the Galaxy S23. With these conflicting reports, Samsung fans should take the information on the rumored third foldable phone with caution for now.
