Tencent has launched TenPayGo, a new mobile payment app designed to make digital transactions easier for international travelers visiting China, as the technology giant looks to benefit from growing inbound tourism ahead of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Shenzhen.
Developed by Tencent’s WeChat Pay team, TenPayGo allows overseas visitors to make mobile payments across the extensive WeChat Pay merchant network. The service can be used at tens of millions of locations throughout China, including retail stores, restaurants and popular tourist attractions.
The app is designed to address one of the key challenges facing foreign travelers in China, where mobile payments have become a dominant method for everyday transactions. International visitors can link supported credit cards or digital wallets from their home countries to TenPayGo, giving them access to local payment services without relying exclusively on domestic Chinese banking options.
Tencent first announced plans for TenPayGo in May as part of a broader push to improve payment accessibility and digital services for inbound travelers. The initiative comes as China works to attract more international visitors and make its widely used mobile payment ecosystem easier for foreigners to navigate.
As part of that effort, Tencent also announced a partnership with PayPal in May. The collaboration is intended to expand payment options for international users and strengthen connections between overseas financial services and Tencent’s domestic payment infrastructure.
The launch comes ahead of the APEC summit in Shenzhen, which is expected to bring additional international visitors to the city and increase demand for convenient cross-border payment solutions.
By combining Tencent’s extensive WeChat Pay acceptance network with support for overseas cards and digital wallets, TenPayGo could simplify purchases for travelers across China. The launch also underscores Tencent’s efforts to expand the accessibility of its payment ecosystem as international tourism to China continues to increase.
